Education of stakeholders

The workshops

Several workshops were organized across the project area. In addition to the aims enumerated above, the project was intended to transfer knowledge related to the sustainable use, restoration and maintenance of platy limestone objects and architectural elements. The table below (Table 7.1) lists and describes the various workshops held.

HERAG 34 First practical workshop on the possibilities and ways of using platy limestone in various objects and shapes. Methods and techniques of applying platy limestone on floors and roofing were presented.

HERAG 51 The second workshop within the RoofOfRock project was held by the Borak spring. The mill’s roof was covered with platy limestone, and is, at more than 100 years old, one of the oldest mills remaining in the area. Craftsmen illustrated the technique of laying a stone roof and visitors to the workshops were able to collect important information about the secrets of this extremely rare craft in Herzegovina.

HERAG 35 Attendants were shown flooring techniques using local platy limestone, with the flooring of the entrance of a small local school. Both good and bad practices related to this technique were presented. Mr. Radoslav Dodig held a lecture entitled "The use of platy limestone for construction in Herzegovina".

HERAG 43 The roof of a small object in Radišići was covered with platy limestone slabs excavated from a local quarry. Different techniques of installing platy limestone slabs on walls, floors and roofs were shown. Mr. Radoslav Dodig held a lecture entitled "The use of platy limestone for construction in Herzegovina", with a special review of the use of stone from local quarries.

HERAG 38 Local craftsmen illustrated the technique of placing and installing platy limestone into walls and wall coverings. A lecture was held on the possibilities of various uses of platy limestone as building material.

IDA 26 Platy limestone roofing methods and techniques with practical demonstrations, the reuse of platy limestone, good and bad practice, geological background (genesis, geological features, formations), architectural background: typical shapes, solutions and elements.
7 Široki Brijeg (vrelo Borak) Bosnia and Herzegovina

HERAG 21 A workshop was held at the spring of Borak, which is one of the most attractive locations in West Herzegovina county for the use of platy limestone. Here many old mills that were constructed largely of platy limestone. The flooring inside the mills, too, was done in platy limestone. A lecture by Mr. Radoslav Dodig enetitled: "The use of plate limestone in construction in Herzegovina" was held.

HERAG 39 The use of platy limestone with an emphasis on its use in flooring was illustrated with some demonstrations. People were able to get information about the history of the city park and the traditional use of platy limestone throughout history, with a special emphasis on Ljubuški and its history. Mr. Radoslav Dodig gave a lecture entitled "The use of platy limestone in construction in Herzegovina", and a presentation of good and bad practices was held for both inhabitants of and visitors to Ljubuški.

DOLINA 126 Different activities/workshops were organized for different stakeholders: 1 workshop on the development of natural stone in the municipality of San Dorligo della Valle/Dolina - guidelines for the restoration and upgrading of heritage with platy limestone, and a description of best practice. Another workshop in Val Rosandra: geological points of interest, where the development of new routes in the natural reserve were illustrated; 1 workshop on building dry walls; 2 workshops with practical demonstrations and participation in stone cutting, for adults and children. Two guided tours, 3 exhibitions, projections of video documentaries and a market with objects made of stone and local products were also organized.

RERA SD 23 The use of stone roofing in rural architecture was presented. A visit to and presentation of the masonry school in Pučišća (island of Brač), which enjoys a long tradition, was organized. Best practices were presented in the use of local stone.
11 Škocjan Slovenia

UP ZRS 9 A workshop on the popularization of limestone construction and a presentation of guidelines, together with an enumeration of good and bad practices was held in Škocjan, Slovenia. The architectural landscape of Škocjan and Matavun were presented, with a focus on traditional karstic architecture. Professional guided tours of the renovated homestead "Pr'Betancu" and of the homestead "Škrateljnova domačija" in Divača were held. Afterwards, Prof. Mitja Guštin presented the conservation guidelines for platy limestone in architecture, as prepared by Prof. Domen Zupančič.

The activities, atmosphere and environment of the workshops as seen in the photos below (Figures 7.1 – 7.20).
